In salt-water applications, treat and prime steel and aluminum with KnockOut, Encore’s Rust Converter & Primer System. Once KnockOut is dry, top coat with two coats of RustOx. This system is a proven performer, providing a safe solution to coal tar epoxy systems.
This steel coating system is dramatically faster than coal tar epoxy. Typically, with coal tar epoxy, the applicator must blast the substrate to a white profile, prime, and then apply two coats of coal tar epoxy, waiting 24 hours between coats.
RustOx is a tough, durable, direct-to-rust coating that suffocates rust and prevents rust bleed-through. Requires minimum prep. Simply remove loose rust scale or loose coating, and wipe with MEK before painting. RustOx dries quickly and provides years of protection against further degradation. Approved for inland and salt-water environments. Great for steel, aluminum, and galvanized surfaces.

KnockOut can be applied with an airless sprayer, brushed, or rolled. Knockout is unlike other converter/primers because it’s thick enough to stay in place on vertical surfaces without sagging. It can be sprayed overhead and won’t drip.
KnockOut converts within seconds, dries within minutes, and can be top-coated with any paint or coating that is compatible with an acrylic film. Only one coat is required, which saves considerable time and material expense.
KnockOut has surpassed other types of converter/primer systems in ASTM and Petroleum Institute testing by as much as 10:1 in service life testing (salt fog chamber and salt-water submersion). See test report.

Great article! I wish I had known about RustOx and KnockOut when we stained our deck last year. The rust from the nails has already bled through! I am definitely going to try these products on our steel hulled houseboat though. The application is so much easier than other products to prevent progressive rust. Revolutionary product!
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this, KnockOut seems like the right way to go rather than coal tar epoxy. I'll definitely be using Encore products from here on out.
